I have a problem with documentaries. No matter how good the topic I have a tendency to tune out about an hour into them. This is something that I have been thinking in all of our post production meetings. To me a music documentary is 1 part audio (ie the story being told) and 1 part visual (ie please don't bore me with people being interviewed) with the music driving the film forward. That is why I have taken a lot of consideration to budgeting in the motion graphics for photos and possible animated sequences.
In looking for inspirations for the style of the film I keep coming back to "kid Stays in The Picture" and "American: The Bill Hicks Story." I also watched a ton of animated short documentaries. After months and months of concept meetings I think we have found something we like. We are trying to make the art work of Annie work in to that concept, since many of you donated toward some a copy of her original art work.
Like always, can't wait to share
